We all may agree that it is very important that our elderly are not only in good health, mentally and spiritually, but also able to stay in the labour market as long as possible and retrain for new jobs and modern skills (unfortunately, Hungary is one of the last countries in the EU in terms of training and retraining for the elderly).
The research team organises conferences, round tables, debates, book launches on these topics, and we will continue to publish the proceedings here on the University’s website. The research lab also publishes the journal Geronto-education, the issues of which are available on our website.
At the suggestion of the research lab, we have developed a mentoring system in various courses at Milton Friedman University since 2009, which has formerly existed only at Western universities, whereby tutors work with elderly students to help them succeed in their studies and exams. This has already had a positive impact in just six months: the academic results of elderly students in BA and MA courses have improved and the number of applications has also increased dramatically. It is also very common at the correspondence courses that students enroll “in pairs”, where mothers and their children enrol together, helping each other to study, that proves to be a good practice of intergenerational learning.
In addition to this, the research lab organises the training series called Óbuda Academy for Seniors, which has been running at our institution since autumn 2011: plenary lectures, courses and consultations, complemented by a successful Senior Club from 2015 to 2022. These training courses are a good opportunity for our MA in Andragogy students in geronto-andragogy to do practical training and individual research.
